Top 5 Desserts

1 September 2015

What can we say? When it comes to fabulous meal-enders, these five delicious Atlanta desserts take the cake. Leave that diet at the door and give in to that sweet tooth. Bliss awaits!

If you haven’t been to Ford Fry’s newest venture, Marcel, yet, it’s about time to give into the peer pressure. While the Oysters Bienville, L’Entrecôte, and Lobster Chowder in a puff pastry are all swoon-worthy, the steak restaurant’s dessert menu has a full-lineup of wins. In first place is the Baked Alaska. Like other classics on this menu, this one gets a slight twist served with graham cracker ice cream and a marshmallow meringue. It’s like a grown-up s’more that’s set ablaze table-side. The best part? It’s jumbo size.

As if the ATM-style cupcake pick-up area didn’t win you over already, the decadent sweets inside of Sprinkles Cupcakes certain will. The beautiful icing-topped cupcakes run the gamut of flavors, but we’re particularly fond of the Sprinkles Sundae. The massive treat features a scoop of Sprinkles ice cream wedged beneath a cupcake top and bottom—we’re sticking with the classic Red Velvet, you can’t beat it.

The word “dessert” need not be synonymous with “calorie bust.” SunO is evidence for this. The shaved-ice spot in North Decatur and Duluth scoops tasty frozen treats topped with fresh fruit and syrups with a fraction of your typical calories. When we stop in—typically on one of those classically heated Atlanta days—we’re suckers for these icy refreshers. Our fave? The Fruits Party. Take the original flavored SunO (frozen purified water that’s thinly shaved and mixed with whole milk and pure granulated surgar), then top it with cherry, strawberries, banna, kiwis, peaches and condensed milk.

There’s a simple perfection that elevates the chocolate chip cookie. Sugar Shack gets that, and we are so happy that they do. Their range of chewy cookies includes peanut butter, snicker doodle, oatmeal raisin, chocolate walnut, and chocolate peanut butter, but we’re really smitten with the plain ole chocolate chip cookie. If you can walk away with just one… good for you. Otherwise, grab a few. Or, if you’re catering to a larger crowd, think about snagging an apple pie or a caramel cake while you’re at it.

Just pick a time. Ice cream is pretty much bound to hit the spot, especially when you’re getting it from Morelli’s. The ATL-based homemade ice cream emporium has long been a favorite (just ask Conan O’Brien or Bon Apetit Magazine, both are fans), which makes addresses in Edgewood, Dunwoody, and Ormewood. As expected, there’s a whole slew of flavors to choose from (ginger lavender, Brooklyn cheesecake, and cream cheese & guava are among the more unusal flavors). Though, you’d be hard-pressed to find a scoop more sastisfying than the three-layer Death by Chocolate.
