In case you needed another reason to love America’s favorite nut (which is actually a legume), we have plenty of reasons you should celebrate the greatest snack on earth during March, as well as all year long! Did you know peanuts are now considered a Superfood? According to The Peanut Institute, numerous studies haven proven peanuts and peanut butter are nutrient dense and decrease the risk of cancer, diabetes and heart disease. It’s a pint-sized, protein powerhouse that is heart-healthy, diabetes-fighting and a mood booster! That is Superfood status!

Learn More About Peanuts’ Superfood Status

Peanuts are an excellent choice for snacking and cooking because of their affordability, great taste and excellent nutrition. Did you know Georgia peanut farmers grow nearly 50 percent of the peanuts produced in the United States each year? How cool is that? Most of the peanuts grown in Georgia are made into peanut butter, and/or used in peanut candy and snacks.
Check out more facts from the National Peanut Board here.

On March 19, 2020 Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms issued an executive order limiting Atlanta restaurants to take out services; closing bars, gyms and other businesses in an effort to stop the spread of COVID-19. But the truth is, many restaurants had already made the decision to suspend dine-in options long before that, switching to takeout and delivery only, or in some heartbreaking cases closing doors completely. Deborah VanTrece, executive chef of Twisted Soul Cookhouse & Pours, was worried about the health of her staff and customers which led her to temporarily close her restaurant with the plan of reopening with a takeout service. “I just couldn’t guarantee whether or not the people walking into my restaurant were virus-free,” said VanTrece.

Over the past several days, restaurants have been forced to give their operational strategies a complete overhaul in an effort to pay the bills and pay their employees for as long as possible. Twisted Soul is now offering a “Pay What You Can” takeaway service that includes pre-cooked meals that are packaged to reheat immediately or freeze for later. On the other side of town, the team behind il Giallo and Lagarde are now offering takeout and curbside pick-up only at each of their restaurants. Restaurant owners are having to get creative to survive.

And while the restaurants themselves are struggling, the biggest worry comes from not being able to take care of their own staff. “It’s not so much about keeping the door open as much as it is us trying to take care of our community – of servers, bus boys, dishwashers. We don’t have the luxury of working from home,” says VanTrece. Many restaurants have even created fundraising pages with 100% of the proceeds going towards supporting their staff.

Despite these dark times, the support from the Atlanta community has been overwhelming and truly inspiring. Local influencers have been sharing ways to support local businesses and customers are asking how they can donate and help in other ways. Chef Jamie Adams of il Giallo said there has been a huge amount of support for local restaurants and for the pick-up service they are offering. “The results have given us a tremendous amount of optimism. It’s definitely working,” said Adams. Seven Chan of Poke Burri and Lifting Noodles said he has received a large number of Instagram messages and emails from people who care about his restaurants. “The support has been really amazing,” said Chan. Atlanta certainly is not going to let its local restaurants go down without a fight!

So how can we as a community help? VanTrece said, “Support the people who are doing takeaway and delivery.” We all have to eat, right? So why not support our local restaurants in the process. But there are other ways, too. Adams said purchasing gift cards helps with cash flow. “It’s a great way to support all of the restaurants. We would love to see people out there buying gift cards at every place they frequent,” said Adams. And the aid goes beyond purchasing, it is also important to stay active online! Chan said to continue doing the digital things like “sharing, posting and leaving reviews.”

Now more than ever, the Taste of Atlanta team embraces our mission to support the restaurant community in every way possible.  Our goal is to help rally our thousands of food-loving followers around our struggling friends in the restaurant world and be a resource for all. “Our mission from day one has always been to turn tasters into diners” says Founder and CEO Dale DeSena.  “Alongside our restaurant partners, we’ve weathered the recession, Hurricane Katrina, and other challenges over our 19 years.  We’ve never seen anything quite like this, but we will weather this, too!”

Follow us on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter for the latest on restaurants offering takeout and delivery. Atlanta’s food scene and community spirit are unshakable! We invite you to work with us to support our restaurants during these hard times.  When this is all over, we will be able to break bread together again as these wonderful establishments welcome us home.

Our team has been closely monitoring developments surrounding COVID-19, and during these uncertain times, one thing stands above all else: the health and safety of Food That Rocks attendees, participating restaurants, sponsors and our community.

In light of this and in response to recommendations from the CDC, health organizations and City of Sandy Springs, we have decided to postpone Food That Rocks to later this summer. We are working to firm up details and will stay in touch with you and send updates as they become available.

Purchased tickets will be honored for our new Food That Rocks 2020 date, with no additional action required on your part. Food that Rocks is a true celebration of Sandy Springs and our amazing restaurant community. We look forward to gathering together to taste, sip and dance the night away with our community this summer.

Thank you again for your support, and stay well.

When Atlantans think of soccer, patios and Guinness beer, chances are thoughts of Fado Irish Pub are not far behind. Fado opened its doors in Buckhead more than 20 years ago and has become a well-known gathering spot for sports events and beyond.

As an authentic Irish pub, Fado always goes all out for St. Patrick’s Day. Keep reading to learn more about its incredible history, this year’s St. Patrick’s Day line-up of events and more!

1. How did Fado find its home in Atlanta?

Fado opened in Buckhead in 1996 — it was a happy accident. Irish Pub Company, a small company based out of Dublin, came to the U.S. with the goal of selling restauranteurs and bar owners on the Irish pub concept. They were a design and build firm that created custom, authentic Irish pubs in Ireland and then shipped them around the world where they would be installed and enjoyed for years to come.

Unfortunately, the company didn’t find much interest because the concept didn’t fit the typical U.S. mold. It didn’t have big open spaces, there were no TVs at the time and there were no domestic beers. Staying true to their belief in the concept, the small group of entrepreneurs decided to open one themselves. They chose Atlanta because of its location on the East Coast (the team was still living in Ireland) and the availability of direct flights.

In 1996, the first authentic pub in the U.S. opened on the corner of Peachtree and Buckhead Ave.  Above the door it said ‘Fado Fado’ which in Gaelic means ‘long, long ago’. The phrase would be used at the beginning of a story like ‘once upon a time…’. The team chose that name because they wanted to tell the story of Ireland’s rich pub culture here in the U.S. The outlet was an instant hit and quickly became the number one Guinness account in the entire United States. Over the years it has become a mainstay in Buckhead and is known for its quality and everything from a place for informal gatherings, family events, corporate functions and plenty of international soccer and rugby.

2. How have Fado’s St. Patrick’s Day events evolved since you opened in 1996?

It’s gone from an event that spilled out into the back parking lot one day a year, with the peak drinking time of 3-4pm (10 years ago it was 12am!) to a multi-day outdoor event that takes up a city block with multiple stages, beer gardens and a ‘wind down’ Family Day after the big festival that includes multiple family activities and a petting zoo for the kids.

We have also expanded our alcohol offerings. In previous years we mainly served whiskey and beer in tubs, where as today we have added cocktails, tubs of canned wines and hard seltzers. Our music selection has also changed to include DJs and live bands. We have noticed that DJs play an integral part throughout our event, especially late night when the live music ends.

3. What are some St. Patrick’s Day food specials that have stayed around since the beginning?

#1 is Corned Beef and Cabbage. We took it off the menu one year and there was a small riot!

4. What is new for St. Patrick’s Day this year?

We are going to have a new look! Remodeling is underway for our new outdoor patio and we are hoping it will be done by Paddy’s Day! We’ve been hosting this event for more than 20 years, and there is a pretty simple formula – great music, fantastic food and drink and an enthusiastic team serving up the best pints and cocktails from morning ‘til close! The goal is to make it look easy.

5. What is the best part about St. Patrick’s Day for your team?

The day after. Just kidding! St Patrick’s Day is an all-hands-on-deck kind of event. Everyone in the company, including the owner, is working very long hours. And there is nothing quite like the camaraderie felt in the middle of a 15-hour St Patrick’s day shift! Except, maybe, the taste of the first pint when we’re all done.

6. What are the line-up of events for St. Patrick’s Day at Fado Irish Pub?

On Friday, March 13th, we are hosting our 19th annual St Baldrick’s Head-shaving event. The lead volunteer & his family are Irish and he has been working with us every year since his young daughter was stricken with cancer. And, gratefully, she has been cancer-free ever since! Shave your head in solidarity with kids battling childhood cancer and all the money you raise will help fight end childhood cancer!  We will have donation cans available around the pub. Or go online HERE and donate today!

On Saturday, March 14 we open our doors at 7:30am for international soccer and rugby. And our annual outdoor block party is from 1pm – 10pm with live music, Irish dancers, pipers and plenty of food and drink. And when the outdoor event wraps up, the DJ kicks it up inside ‘til late.

On Tuesday, March 17 our doors open again at 8am for our die hard Paddy’s – a pint of Guinness and some breakfast. Folks come down before work, pop in for lunch, an afternoon soccer game and then the real party gets going around 4pm. We’ll have Irish dancers throughout. Plus, live music and our DJ lined up ‘til close.

In case you needed another reason to love America’s favorite nut (which is actually a legume), we have plenty of reasons you should celebrate the perfectly powerful peanut during the holidays, as well as all year long! Did you know peanuts are now considered a Superfood? According to The Peanut Institute, numerous studies haven proven peanuts and peanut butter are nutrient dense and decrease the risk of cancer, diabetes and heart disease. That is Superfood status!

Picture2

“Studies conducted in the United States and around the world reveal that eating peanuts regularly helps prevent disease, improves life expectancy and delivers positive effects throughout the body,” says Samara Sterling, Ph.D., director of research for The Peanut Institute. “Peanuts qualify as a superfood because they’re nutrient-dense, delivering superior health benefits in a very small serving. When you compare peanuts to kale, it’s a stark difference in terms of the amount you need to consume to reap the food’s benefits. For example, one serving of peanuts contains six times as much protein as a serving of raw kale and eight times as much niacin.”

Check out more facts from the National Peanut Board below!

November is here and the holiday season is upon us! Besides the traditional end-of-year holidays, did you know peanut butter lovers get the entire month of November to celebrate America’s favorite nut butter? That’s right, November is Peanut Butter Lovers Month!

Peanut butter is found is found in three out of four pantries across the United States. It’s an American staple, and for good reason, too. It’s affordable, sustainable, nutritious and tastes great! It’s also so versatile. Kids and adults alike love it on sandwiches, dipped with fruits and veggies, used in savory dishes and even sweet desserts!

Picture1

When it comes to traditional vs. natural peanut butter, many wonder which is best. The Peanut Institute provides some great insight on this topic. According to TPI, to be considered real peanut butter, both traditional and natural versions must contain a minimum of 90 percent peanuts, no artificial sweeteners, colors or preservatives. The primary difference is the way the peanut butter is blended. Traditional peanut butter is blended before it reaches the shelf for convenience and creaminess. Natural, on the other hand, is not; therefore, when purchased, it requires stirring. The nutrition for each remains the same! To stabilize traditional peanut butter to eliminate separation, manufacturers may add a small amount of partially or fully hydrogenated oil. Some also may add small amounts of sugar or salt for added flavor. Even so, TPI says the difference in macronutrient content per serving between the two types is minimal.

Speaking of nutrition, peanut butter is packed with health benefits. Take a look at a few benefits the National Peanut Board describes below!

Celebrating Peanut Butter Lovers Month is easier than ever! There are lots of recipe options for holiday dishes and even more options for everyday enjoyment. To get started, check out this No Bake Peanut Butter Pie recipe created by a Georgia peanut farmer’s wife. It’s the perfect dish to take to any of your holiday gatherings! For more delicious peanut butter recipes, check out the Georgia Peanuts Pinterest page. You can also visit the Georgia Peanut Commission website for even more recipes, nutrition information and fun facts to celebrate all year long!
